Your Facebook stalking just became a whole lot more real

It might not be a bad time to do that clear out of your Facebook friends that you’ve been planning for the past few weeks with the news that Zuckerberg & Co. are bringing a feature they’re calling ‘Nearby Friends’.

It’s going to be a location-based service that lets you know where your friends are, and shows it on a map so you can hang out in real life, or simply meet up and look at each other face to face as you instant message each other on WhatsApp, which they also own.

The feature will be added to the mobile app and use the geolocation of your phone to let friends know that you’re nearby (hence the name of the feature) every now and then, at which point we presume you could choose to go and meet them, if you like people in real life. We don’t, so we’ll stay in our room.

The feature will be opt-in though, so don’t worry about them just telling everyone where you are yet.
