Facebook Messenger’s new feature could save you money on your phone bill

Very handy…

Facebook Messenger uses a awful lot of data which can be extremely annoying for users as it eats into their data plans.

But this will be a problem of the past with the next update as Facebook have taken steps to ensure that their app will be far less data hungry in the future.

They’re doing this through the Data Saver feature, according to Android Police.

Currently the Data Saver feature is on the beta version of the Android app, but it will be rolled out across all future versions of the app on iOS and Android.

As it stands, Messenger will automatically download all media that is sent to you, whether or not you’re interested in viewing it or not. But when you enable Data Saver, it will allow you to pick and choose the pictures and videos you wish to see, thus saving your data.

The feature will only work when your using your mobile data and will include a handy counter which you can reset so you’re able to judge how much data the app is consuming.

The move mirrors a similar switch made by Snapchat over the last 12 months where they disabled the automatic downloading of stories while using your mobile data.

Messenger’s new feature could mean you shave a few euros off your mobile phone bill which is always welcome.
