Facebook might be buying solar-powered drones

That's it, they're definitely trying to take over the world

JOE

That’s it, they’re definitely trying to take over the world

First they bought up our favourite mobile messaging service WhatsApp, and now they look like they might be getting their hands on our beloved Titan Aerospace, our solar-powered drone maker of choice. Keep an eye out in the sky for JOE’s drone, we plan to use it to spy on you all.

Anyway, the process of acquiring the drone company is believed to be well underway, although Business Today are reporting that neither party are giving too much away on that front and refuse to talk about any possible merger. If they did go ahead and get themselves some drones, they would look a bit like this:

Should the deal go through, it would seemingly form part of Zuckerberg’s Internet.org plan, which has partners in Nokia, Samsung and Qualcomm Inc., and which aims to bring the Internet to those around the world who don’t have access to it. According to RT, that number is around 2.7 billion people, so there’s a whole new market there for Facebook and Zuckerberg to tap in to.

As TechCrunch pointed out, the signal would be pretty weak, but it would allow people to get on to WhatsApp services or perhaps even the Facebook app, and all through Facebook’s own internet signal, making them valuable and possibly lifelong customers with a real connection (pun definitely intended) to the company.

However, they’re not the only ones trying something similar, as Google have been looking into launching weather balloons that would provide Internet access, and New York’s Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) have also been looking in to low-orbit satellites that would do the same, so it’s not totally preposterous.
