Google has made “substantial” contributions to climate change deniers (Report)

Google coronavirus

A shocking development.

Recent information has revealed that Google has made “substantial” contributions to a number of climate deniers in Washington, despite often claiming that it supports political action on the current climate emergency.

According to The Guardian, information on the company’s website shows that Google has donated to more than a dozen organisations that have campaigned against climate legislation.

Google’s website shows a list of hundreds of beneficiaries, which includes companies like the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a conservative group that are said to have been instrumental in convincing Donald Trump to abandon the Paris agreement, which was signed by former US President Barack Obama while he was in office.

A spokesperson for Google said it sponsors a number of organisations from across the political spectrum that advocate for “strong technology policies”.

“We’re hardly alone among companies that contribute to organisations while strongly disagreeing with them on climate policy,” the spokesperson said.

The company refused to tell The Guardian how much it has given to the organisations in question.

A message on Google’s website does state that sponsorship does not necessarily mean that Google endorses an organisation’s entire agenda.

It reads: “Google’s sponsorship or collaboration with a third party organisation doesn’t mean that we endorse the organisations’ entire agenda, its events or advocacy positions nor the views of its leaders or members.”
