Here’s what Ireland’s top Google searches were for 2016

Alan Loughnane

We’re a curious bunch…

When someone asks a question and you don’t know the answer, your typical response is to tell them to “Google it ta feck, will ya.”

Google released a list of the most searched things over the past 12 months to give the world an insight into the hearts and minds of the people.

But in the year 2016, where there was so much drama, tragedy and chaos, it was still the sporting world that took centre stage as Euro 2016 was the most Googled thing in Ireland this year.

While Euro 2016, and Ireland’s performances in France topping the list, the craze that was Pokemon GO was the second most searched thing this year.

The tragic passing of David Bowie was third on the list following his death in January this year, shortly after the release of his album Blackstar.

Surprisingly, Donald Trump was just fourth on the list of most Googled terms in Ireland but we think if you were to take searches from the second half of the year only, he would comfortably be top of the list.

Of course, it was always going to rank highly on the list and Brexit didn’t disappoint, rounding out the top five.

Other top searches included Olympics, Prince, the US election and the superhero film Suicide Squad starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.

taking the final spot in the top ten was Ireland’s thrilling victory over the All Blacks in Chicago as the public swelled with pride at the team’s achievement… and the reactions of Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll.
