JOE’s TechXplanation: How to cancel your Apple Music subscription before it charges you money

This could save you some money if you don't want to subscribe

Alan Loughnane

Welcome to JOE’s weekly TechXplanation, where we take the most talked about pieces of tech/apps and give you the knowledge.

This week we’ll be having a look at how to cancel the auto-renewal feature on Apple Music so you aren’t caught on the hop with a bill at the end of your free trial.

So what is it…

Apple Music’s three-month free trial is a handy way to get some ad-free music on your phone or laptop until the trial ends on October 22.

It’s basically Apple’s own version of Spotify, but you probably knew that already.

But, you may or may not have heard, that unless you cancel the automatic renewal on your free trial, you will get charged a month’s subscription on the day the free trial ends.

This is all well and good if you’re going to continue using Apple Music anyway, but if you’re not interested in committing your musical streaming future to Apple just yet, you may want to cancel your automatic renewal of the subscription.

While the trial has a couple of months to run yet, you can cancel the subscription in advance at any time so there’s no time like the present.

Cost?

If you don’t cancel the subscription, it will only cost you €9.99 a month, which won’t exactly break the bank, but if you don’t want to use the service, it’s money you shouldn’t have to be spending.

Why should I be using it?

Apple Music as we discussed earlier, is free at the minute so that’s as good a reason as any to give it a whirl.

But if you’re like us, and only want to use the service during the free trial, we have outlined how to extricate yourselves from the service once the free trial ends.

The guide to doing it on your iPhone…

First up, tap the ‘Face Icon’ and follow up on the next page with ‘View Apple ID’.

After entering your Apple login details, you should tap manage and turn the automatic renewal slider to the off position.

You should be greeted with a scene like the one below.

What’s the alternative?

Well, the alternative is paying €9.99 a month when your trial ends on October 22, or else switch to a different streaming service such as Spotify or Tidal.

The choice is yours.
