JOE’s TechXplanation: iRig Mic HD

The best mobile microphone on the market

Joe Harrington

Tech explained.

Welcome to JOE’s weekly TechXplanation, where we take the most about talked about pieces of tech and, y’know, give you the knowledge.

This week we’re taking a look at one of the best mobile microphones on the market right now – the iRig Mic HD.

So what is it?

It’s a high-definition handheld microphone that you can use with your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

It allows you to record studio-quality audio so it can be used for all your Frost/Nixon-esque interviews or if you have a band it’ll record vocals and acoustic instruments to a high quality.

The clever part is that the microphone connects to your iPhone charging point instead of the headphone jack so you can monitor the sound levels as you record.

It’s a must-own piece of kit for journalists, aspiring journalists, podcast makers and internet vloggers.

Why is it in the news?

We used it at Slane over the weekend and we were blown away with the quality of the recordings.

The recordings were used as part of a round-up video from Saturday when Foo Fighters, Hozier and Ash graced the stage in the Meath town.

You can look yourself here.

The entire piece was recorded and edited on an iPhone 6 and the vox pops and piece to camera were recorded on the iRig Mic HD.

Why should I be using it?

If you are a freelance journalist or a student journalist and you want to stand out, all you need is a good this microphone, an iPhone and a story obviously.

The cost is relatively low considering the quality of the recording on your report, podcast or video. It’s the cheapest way to create a professional-sounding product.

Cost?

We bought ours in Music Maker in Dublin for €129.99.

What’s the alternative?

The Zoom Recorder is one of the best on the market but it’s more clunky and requires a memory card or USB to transfer audio on to your device to edit.
