Know anyone who this might affect?

Note: Story updated on 11 January with the following statement from Netflix.

“Further to your article about Netflix account sharing, Netflix is not working with/partnering with Synamedia.

Netflix terms of use clarifies that Netflix login information is intended for members of the same household. Netflix allows its members to set up to five profiles on each account and limits usage of devices that can access Netflix at the same time by plans. For instance, the €13.99 plan allows 4 devices to stream at the same time; the €10.99 plan allows two, and €7.99 allows one. So there are natural guardrails in place that limit account sharing.”

Netflix have changed the way we consume movies and TV for good since its rise to popularity.

It’s gotten to the point where if someone asks you what you did over the weekend, you don’t even have to tell them what it was exactly you watched on TV, the word “Netflix” will suffice.

And as brilliant as it is, some people still don’t fork out the monthly fee for the streaming service. Instead, they mooch off of their friends and family.

Well, that might not be an option for much longer.

According to Digital Spy, Jean Marc Racine, CPO of Synamedia that they may have to start clamping down:

“Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore.

“Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users.

“It’s a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream.”

So for anyone still using someone else’s Netflix account, your days might be numbered. And please, for the love of God, stop using your ex’s. There’s just no need for that sort of behaviour…
