New info on Wikileaks show CIA can turn your Smart TV into a listening device

Rory Cashin

We’ve already been slightly paranoid about our phones being hacked, but now we can’t even trust our own TVs?

That’s what the latest info dump on Wikileaks wants you to believe, according to a report put together by The Intercept.

According to the newly released documents, the CIA teamed up with British Intelligence to create a programme called “Weeping Angel” (The creepiest code-name ever? Discuss.), a type of malware that could infect your Smart TV.

The documents only mention one specific but highly popular type of Samsung Smart TV, but the malware created a ‘Fake Off’ position, where the TV looks like it is off, but the microphone used to pick up your oral commands has been turned on and turned into a recording device, sending the files to whoever is listening because, yep, your Smart TV is connected to the internet.

It isn’t clear if the malware can be set up remotely also, as the files describe it being uploaded to the Smart TV via a USB device.

Of course, all of this only goes to further fuel the fire that everything Edward Snowden has been telling us for years is most likely painfully, scarily true.
