The gaming gurus from Nintendo have announced a new console set for release this coming October, but it might leave a few fans scratching their heads.

Nintendo have announced that they’ll be introducing a new entry-level tablet-like handheld system to the market on October 12 called the Nintendo 2DS. Unlike its older brother, the 3DS, the new 2DS won’t come with a 3D function – as the name suggests. But you’ll still be able to play 3DS and DS games on the new 2DS thanks to the new console’s backwards capabilities.

So why have Nintendo decided to bring out such a device? Seems like a one step forward, two steps back move, right? Well, one of the main reasons for bringing out the 2DS is because the company wants to cater to a younger audience as the 3DS is primarily aimed at gamers aged 7-years-old and up.

The 2DS’s starting price will also be dramatically lower than that of the 3DS and early figures suggest it will cost $120, which comes in around €100. So if you want to play the latest Mario Bros., Zelda or Mario Kart, but you’re not too arsed with the 3D function then this is the device for you.

Speaking to IGN.com Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, said, “…with the Nintendo 3DS, we were clear to parents that, ‘hey, we recommend that your children be seven and older to utilise this device.’ So clearly that creates an opportunity for five-year-olds, six-year-olds, that first-time handheld gaming consumer.”
