Pics: Your iPhone has a hidden feature that’s tracking your every move

It knows where you live

Carl Kinsella

Paranoid partners everywhere, listen up. We’re about to teach you a new trick.

It turns out that our iPhones have been taking notes on where we’ve been without our knowledge. And when we say taking notes, we mean that these untrustworthy little machines are really doing their homework.

Buried deep in the ‘Privacy’ section of our iPhones that we’d all prefer to ignore, there is an extensive list of details about where you’ve been, how many times you’ve been there and how long you spent there.

We like to think that our smartphones are on our side, but the reality is that your iPhone stores up information that, in the wrong hands, can be very revealing.

In fact, China was worried enough by the Frequent Locations function to label it a national security concern.

The way to access this well-hidden database is to click Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Frequent Locations.

Frequent Location stuff

Once you’re in there, your iPhone will provide you with an unsettlingly helpful list of the places where you spend the most time, as well as a handy map, just in case your stalker gets lost on the way to where you live.

It seems that if you frequently spend long enough in one place, your iPhone will decide that that place is ‘Home’, and will not distinguish between you and any randomer at a party who picks up your phone when doling out that very private info.

Similarly, it wouldn’t be too difficult to use the menu to play amateur detective as it can reveal details about where you work, which nights out you attend and if you’ve been on holiday.

The good news is that this service can be switched off simply, and the history cleared, meaning that your double-life as a spy stays a secret for another day thanks to JOE.ie.
