Resident Evil 2 remake is inbound for PS4 and Xbox One… and possibly really soon

Resident Evil

Get hype.

The 2015 remaster of the original Resident Evil gave bold new life to an undead classic.

Exploring the dreaded secrets of the Spencer Mansion all over again in glorious HD proved a wonderful, if still terrifying, experience.

A critical and commercial success, Resident Evil HD Remaster broke new sales records, becoming the Playstation Network’s biggest launch title in the service’s history up to that point.

If you’re unfamiliar with knowingly weary video games critic George Weidman aka Super Bunnyhop, he has a good video on the differences between the first edition release and the remake:

All of this is to say that fans have been clamouring for the obvious next step here – a shiny new HD upgrade of Resident Evil 2.

And, having been confirmed in the summer of 2015 but with no official release date attached, it looks like Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield are coming back in time for the 20th anniversary of Resi 2’s original release.

That is if you buy into Capcom cryptically messing about with their social media accounts, at least.

Over the weekend, the main image on the official Resident Evil Twitter and Facebook pages underwent a subtle enough, but potentially crucial, change.

In the background remains the Baker house from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, but the freshly applied old-school font recalls that of… you guessed it, Resident Evil 2.

Plus, Sunday 21 January marks exactly 20 years since the sequel first appeared in Japan and North America.

Not convinced? Die-hard fans have pointed out something else; the Japanese Resident Evil/Biohazard Twitter account suddenly has a gap in the banner, one that could be neatly completed by a new game:

So there you have it.

Resident Evil 2 HD Remake is definitely arriving this month. Maybe.
