The new Super Mario game scores an incredibly rare 10 out of 10 in its first official review

The prestigious games magazine don't give out perfect scores lightly.

Okay. Now we’re excited.

Super Mario Odyssey marks only the 20th time that Edge Magazine has awarded a 10 out of 10 in the 24 years since the publication has been running. In case you’re curious for the company it is now keeping, here are the other 19:

  • Super Mario 64
  • Gran Turismo
  • Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Half-Life 2
  • Halo 3
  • The Orange Box
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Bayonetta
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Rock Band 3
  • Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • The Last Of Us
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Bloodborne
  • Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The review for the new Mario is breathlessly overwhelming, with some of the quotes from the review stating that: “Odyssey already feels like the spiritual successor to Mario 64 we never quite got, before a thrilling final throwback. [It] is a new entry in a long running series that belies its age with sprightly invention, taking big risks with an established formula and having them all pay off handsomely.”

In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the full trailer for the game, which will be released on the Nintendo Switch on Friday 27 October.
