Survey reveals how many of you check your phone during sex

You just can't put them away

Tony Cuddihy

A survey by Unplug in Dublin has revealed that one in 20 of us check our phones during sex.

The survey was conducted after Ed Sheeran vowed to give up social media to avoid ‘seeing the world through a screen’ and now Unplug – an organisation that looks to restore the balance between real life and using technology – has conducted some research on the streets of Dublin.

Speaking to more than 100 punters in The Waterloo and Toners pubs on Baggot Street, they found that…

  • 88% of respondents thought using your phone in a group conversation is rude. However, 83% admit to using their phone when out with friends.
  • 33% of respondents have used a dating app whilst ‘on’ a date.
  • 20% of respondents will have their smart phone on the table during Christmas lunch.
  • 5% have checked their phone during sex.

Interesting stuff, and for those of you using Tinder whilst out on a date, for shame!

Frank Quinn, co-owner of Toners and The Waterloo, explained: “Technology is great but people are losing the art of human conversation.

“You cannot shake hands or make eye contact with a smartphone. Irish pubs are known for conversation and craic and we need to make sure we keep it that way.”

Emer Duffy, neuroscience expert and teacher at Unplug, added: “Technology is affecting the way we think, feel and behave.

“The sheer volume of devices we all have, results in constant multitasking often contributing to mental fatigue.

“The Unplug retreat is a unique opportunity to make friends with your technology with the help of evidence based CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and the neuroscience of “your brain on tech.”
