During a presentation at 44CON, an annual Information Security Conference in London, one analyst demonstrated flaws with a particular printer by playing Doom…

Doom is often regarded as one of the most influential video games released over the past 20-years (it hit shelves back in 1993), as it had a major effect on the gaming industry due to the popularity of its ‘First Person Shooter’ gameplay.

Now Michael Jordon, from Context Information Security, is using the game to highlight security flaws in popular home and office printers.

Recently, at this year’s 44CON, Jordon used a Canon PIXMA printer to run the game and highlight the fact that the printer has an internet interface with no username or password to protect it. That means someone could potentially hack into your network via the printer. No one ever suspects the printer…

Now, we will admit that the game doesn’t exactly run 100 per cent on the printer – it is a printer after all – but it’s still interesting to see what can be hacked into nowadays.

So what’s being done about the problem? Well, Canon has said, “We intend to provide a fix as quickly as is feasible.” In the meantime, we suggest cracking out Doom for old time’s sake. Why not?
