These unsuspecting Irish commuters thought they were getting a free taxi ride. Sadly, it was just a slightly cruel, but very funny, prank…

There’s nothing better than getting something for free (just check out our Competitions page) and these unfortunate punters thought they were onto a winner when they were offered a FREE taxi ride. Talk about handy, right?

However, instead of getting a free ride in a normal Hailo Taxi, they received a free ‘People Powered Taxi’ ride courtesy of NewsWhip, the news analysing website.

But what exactly is a ‘People Powered Taxi’? Put simply, it’s a load of lads pushing a taxi while they get (news)whipped from behind.

Simples…

Speaking to NewsWhip’s co-founder & Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Mullaney, JOE found out that the unsuspecting punters in question eventually got a free taxi ride to their selected destination… engine included.

The video took quite a bit of work to complete with 12 crew members involved on various different levels, from camera work to pushing the taxi, and it was also recorded a few weeks back during the absolutely manky weather that fell on the country, so that certainly didn’t help to speed things up.

The lads from NewsWhip also enlisted the help of the taxi driver/amateur actor, Paul Sharpe, who was more than happy to play along for the craic. The ‘People Powered Taxi’ prank was created to promote NewsWhip’s ‘People Powered News’ and the new Creator Leader board section, which you can (and should) find out more about over here.
