WATCH: This is what Goldeneye would have looked like if an Xbox 360 remake had gone ahead

Conor Heneghan

A glimpse of a game that will, sadly, never see the light of day.

We’ve made no secret of our love for the Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye on the site in the past.

Following the news last week that it was to be given a new, modern update, we decided to test readers with a special Goldeneye quiz, while our power ranking of the weapons used in the game proved very popular indeed.

Seven years ago, Microsoft explored the possibility of creating a Goldeneye remake for the Xbox 360 through the development company Rare, but ran into licensing issues with Nintendo and the game never saw the light of day.

Earlier this week, however, footage emerged on YouTube, posted by Rare Thief, of 30 minutes of gameplay from the Xbox 360 remake and although it hasn’t been verified whether or not the footage is authentic, it certainly looks pretty impressive.

If the sight of one of the most enjoyable games ever released looking even better than it did in its heyday sparked a desire to play it immediately, then you can always give Goldeneye: Source a go over here.
