WhatsApp has added a new feature that could sting users for sly behaviour

This is the kind of thing that might catch out a fair few shnakes out there.

We all know at least one person has funny texting habits — the kind of person who might send a “U up? xx” message to a girl at 3am and then forward it on to 20 others when he gets no response.

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that will see such behaviour get caught out, as “Forwarded” messages will now carry a label that lets the recipient know that the message has been forwarded.

The messaging giant is also taking steps to limit how many people you can forward messages to. In a blog post, WhatsApp wrote: “Today, we’re launching a test to limit forwarding that will apply to everyone using WhatsApp.”

“In India – where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world – we’ll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we’ll remove the quick forward button next to media messages.”

Users will also now only be able to forward one message to 20 groups, rather than an unlimited number.

Forwarding has caused serious problems in India, where rumours have spread like wildfire through the app thanks to forwarding, resulting in the violent deaths of 17 people, according to TechCrunch.
