WhatsApp has launched a significant privacy update for European Union users after an Irish ruling found the company had breached EU data laws.
From Monday, November 22, users of the messaging platform in the EU will be presented with more information on the data collected by the app and how it’s used.
Users will be shown a banner across the top of their chats that will take them straight to information regarding the new privacy update. This won't affect how the data is used, but will ensure its use is more transparent.
This comes after an Irish ruling found that WhatsApp was in breach of EU data protection laws concerning the sharing of data with other Facebook companies.
The company disagreed with the ruling, but has still been ordered to update the app. It was also fined €225 million.
WhatsApp's parent company Facebook was recently rebranded as Meta Platforms. The group's platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, endured an outage of over six hours earlier this year.
It's estimated that Facebook lost upwards of $100 million during the outage.
