WhatsApp will stop working on a number of older smartphones from January 1, 2018.
The move was announced by WhatsApp in an updated post as they explained that they would be looking forward to future versions of iOS and Android systems rather than maintaining support for older, much outdated models.
“As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use,” the company said in a post.
The messenger service won’t be available on any handsets running Windows Phone 8.0 (or older versions of the operating system), BlackBerry OS or BlackBerry 10.
The affect on users should be negligible as only a very small percentage of the users in the world still use the affected models of phone.
It is also planning to cut support for Nokia S40 devices on 31 December 2018 and phones running Android versions 2.3.7 and older on 1 February 2020.
The full list of unsupported mobile operating systems is:
- BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 after December 31, 2017
- Windows Phone 8.0 and older after December 31, 2017
- Nokia S40 after December 31, 2018
- Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020
