You’re going to be seeing a lot more ads on Facebook Messenger

Alan Loughnane

Well, shit…

One of the best things about apps like Messenger and WhatsApp is the fact that there’s minimal ads despite both apps being free to download.

But that could be about to change drastically as Facebook has confirmed plans to allow businesses send sponsored content to users within the app.

Speaking in Lisbon at the Web Summit, David Marcus, Facebook’s VP of messaging products has said that after initial tests proved very successful for businesses, there’s going to be a vast expansion of the service.

According to c|net, as early as next week, you will be able to open ads on Facebook and engage straight into a Messenger conversation with them. But crucially, if you’ve spoken with them in the past, the company will be able to send you sponsored messages.

Basically, advertising to you through your Messenger inbox.

In the future, if your phone lights up with a notification from Messenger, it may not be a friend that has sent you a message. It could be a company trying to sell you something.

However, Facebook were keen to emphasise that users will have control over the interactions and if you don’t wish to receive such messages from the company, you can simply block them.

We’re sure this will all go smoothly, people love change, right?
