Are Chelsea really prepared to take a £30 million hit on misfiring Torres?

Granted, he’s been a bit crap since joining Chelsea in January, but are the Blues really considering taking a £30 million hit on Spanish misfit Fernando Torres?

If you believe The Daily Mail (and we’re not for a minute suggesting that you always should) this morning, the powers that be at Stamford Bridge have grown tired of Torres’ consistent poor form since joining from Liverpool on a British record transfer fee earlier in the year and are prepared to cut their losses rather than leave him rotting on the bench.

The Spaniard has scored a miserly three Premier League goals in the past 11 months and has also been responsible for two of the most glaringly awful misses this season (see them here and here).

Torres has long lost his place in the starting XI and has barely featured from the bench in recent games, including the 2-1 win over Manchester City on Monday night, where he cut a dejected, forlorn figure while the rest of the substitutes and staff celebrated a significant victory.

The Mail are suggesting that Chelsea had considered sending him out on loan in January in an effort to help him rediscover his best form, but have instead noted top European clubs of his availability and are prepared to accept a fee as low as £20 million for a man who was once of the most feared strikers around.

There have even been scarcely believable murmurings that Torres may be on his way back to Anfield, despite the vitriol with which the Liverpool fans have greeted him since his move.

The Reds, of course, have experience in dealing with a striker signed for a massive fee in January who has failed to perform since. And we’re not talking about Luis Suarez.
