An instant classic of the coaching meltdown variety from the US. Incredibly, this guy is a college golf coach. Golf.
Sport is an emotional business. Players get upset, fan get upset and those in management get upset too. And now an unknown college golf coach called Matt Mahanic is about to become world famous after dropping a truly epic post-game meltdown.
Mahanic is the golf coach of Huntingdon College, an Alabama college who compete in Division III of US college golf. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a very important thread of America’s sporting tapestry.
But Mahanic takes it seriously, very seriously indeed. After a few, sadly unrecorded, previous post-game rants one of the people on the bus was on hand to record the next time he exploded. He duly did after his side played badly at an event in Ohio and that audio was passed to Deadspin, where we found it.
This clip is six minutes long and the rant begins at 1.55 but we advise you listen to it all as Mahanic’s switch from bigging up one player on his squad to absolutely killing the rest is spectacular. What follows from that point on is almost four solid minutes of the type of swearing we’ve only ever heard in a Tarantino film.
We implore you to put headphones in to listen to this or your neighbours will call the guards.
And remember, this is over golf. Golf.
