Becks hails Roy Keane as the ‘best captain’ he ever played under

Both men haven’t come out of Fergie’s new book smelling of roses, but David Beckham has hailed his former team-mate Roy Keane as the best captain he has ever played under.

Fergie’s autobiography has caused quite a stir with the two men coming in for some sharp comments from their old boss. Becks was accused of lacking focus and striving to be famous rather than concentrate on his football while the “frightening” Irishman was sold after he became too much of a negative presence in the changing room according to the Scot.

Beckham himself is launching his own autobiography and at a Q & A yesterday to promote his own book, he took the opportunity to proclaim the Corkman as the best leader he has ever encountered.

“For me, Roy Keane is the best captain I’ve ever played under. He had two career-threatening injuries and he set the example for us young kids,” he told onlookers.

He refused to get drawn into a war of words with Ferguson, simply acknowledging that he gave him his opportunity in the sport.

Becks, who is aiming to set up a team in Miami to play in Major League Soccer, not only refused to criticise Fergie in return, but commented: “He was one of the first in my phone book to contact as the manager!”

We doubt Fergie will be getting that call anytime soon.
