BNP leader Nick Griffin’s anti-Irish tweet

On his brief visit to Belfast yesterday, BNP leader Nick Griffin found time to piss off an awful lot of people.

Yesterday, tens of thousands of people took the streets in Northern Ireland to commemorate 100 years since the Ulster Covenant was signed. There were fears that the large public marches could cause trouble in certain areas but thankfully the day’s events passed off without any serious incidents.

In fact, the biggest flashpoint occurred in cyberspace when the BNP’s Nick Griffin posted a highly inflammatory tweet. Griffin was in Belfast to drum up support for his party and he was spotted handing out flyers during the day.

It was this tweet, posted last night, that is causing all the fuss today.

We shouldn’t be surprised that an organisation like the BNP will be led by a man who tweets divisive stuff like this but if it alerts people to what they are really like, it may prevent them getting a foothold in Northern Irish politics.

We can only hope.

We much prefer his brother Peter anyway…
