Brrrr. Cold snap set to continue through the weekend

Be sure to wrap up nice and warm if you’re heading out of doors over the next few days because it’s going to be chilly, damn chilly, this weekend.

Be sure to wrap up nice and warm if you’re heading out of doors over the next few days because it’s going to be chilly, damn chilly, this weekend.

While the current cold spell is far removed from the Siberian-like conditions experienced last Christmas, there has certainly been a chill in the air over the last few days, with temperatures rarely straying beyond single digits and often plummeting below zero.

According to Met Eireann, that trend is set to continue into this weekend, the last before Christmas, with the mercury dropping to as low as -3 tonight and -4 on Saturday night. The freezing temperatures are expected to be accompanied by widespread showers which could turn into sleet and snow in places.

As a result, frost and icy patches will be widespread, so if you absolutely must hit the road over the weekend, don’t be a hero, take it easy behind the wheel.

Conditions are set to remain the same until late on Sunday evening, when the wintry showers will be less frequent and it won’t feel as cold as it has done to date, with a milder spell set to take hold from early next week.

For those of you spoiled by the avalanche of the white stuff that came our way the last two Crimbos and still crossing your fingers at the prospect of something similar this time around, disappointment awaits as it looks like it will be back to the same old wet, miserable festive period.

Ah well, it was good while it lasted.
