Canon have officially announced a new PowerShot SX30 IS, a high-end performance camera that boasts a 24mm wide lens and a huge 35x optical zoom.

Canon have also equipped the camera with the most effective image stabiliser (IS) ever used in one of its compact cameras, hence the SX30 IS name. The image stabiliser will also offer up to 4.5 stops of compensation.

The SX30 has a 35x optical zoom lens and a 14.1MP camera, while the device also features a Zoom Framing Assist button. This help the shooter keep the subject in the frame if they zoom in from afar. The button also allows the user to zoom out, find a subject and zoom back in. The SX30 also uses a DIGIC 4 image processor.

In addition to still images, the camera can record video at 720p HD resolution, using the entire 35x zoom range. This will enable videos to appear to have been convincingly recorded close up even if the shooter is far from the action.

The PowerShot SX30 IS is set to launch in early October 2010 and to be priced at €549.
