Former Irish under-21 international Conor Sammon has joined Wigan from Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock.
Sammon had been banging in the goals all season north of the border with 18 goals in total and 15 in the SPL, making him the leading scorer in the division.
The 24-year old had attracted interest from Championship sides Derby and Scunthorpe and Scottish giants Celtic, but joined the Latics for an undisclosed fee on a three and a half year deal just before the close of the transfer window on Monday evening.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was delighted with Sammon’s capture, saying: “Conor is a young, hungry player we have been looking at for a while.
'He has developed in an incredible manner over the last six months and it's fortunate that we've been able to move for him before he has achieved his full potential, which we're hoping he will do in a Latics shirt. We are delighted to welcome him on board.'
Dublin-born Sammon, whose arrival has come too late to see him feature in the Wigan squad for the Premier League clash with West Brom tonight, admitted it had been tough to leave Killie, but is confident he has made the right choice.
“It was a big decision to leave a club that has been so good for my career but I'm a Wigan Athletic player now and I want to prove to everyone here they've made the right choice, and prove myself in the Premier League,” he said.
