Kerry legend Darragh Ó Sé is reported to be mulling over an offer to become the next Offaly football manager, according to the Irish Daily Mirror.
According to a report in the red top this morning, the 36-year old was approached about taking over the post from Tom Cribbin and is thought to be giving it serious consideration.
Offaly wouldn’t be the first county to try and tempt Ó Sé into management. He was offered the job of manager of the Laois footballers last year and turned it down, but is said to believe that there is great potential in Offaly, given their tradition of producing great footballing sides over the years.
Ó Sé retired from inter-county football following Kerry's All-Ireland win in 2009 but he is still heavily involved in the game. He continues to turn out for his club, An Ghaeltacht, while he also provides GAA analysis for the Irish Times, Newstalk and TG4.
He was invited as a guest speaker to an Offaly supporters’ club function earlier this year, during which he gave a speech about Offaly’s pedigree as a football county and their achievements in the past.
A number of senior county officials were present at the function and are believed to have had a word in his ear about the possibility of taking over the reins.
If he does go forward for the role, Ó Sé would face competition from Rhode manager Tom Coffey, but whoever does take on the job would face quite a challenge given the poor performance of the Offaly team in recent years.
The Faithful last reached a Leinster Final in 2006 and haven’t won a game in the province since 2007. They are currently mired in Division Three of the National League, having failed to make the breakthrough since earning promotion from Division Four in 2008.
Offaly have won three All-Ireland titles in their history, the last famously coming in 1982, when they denied Kerry what would have been an unprecedented five All-Irelands in a row thanks to a late Seamus Darby goal, possibly the most famous score in the history of the game.
