I Gotta Feeling - that David Guetta got dressed in the dark before the 57th Grammy Awards. How else could he excuse his dire outfit?

By Emmet Purcell

First things first – David Guetta is undoubtedly a talented and deserving Grammy award winner, whose distinctive mix of pop, dance and hip hop has certainly driven each respective genre ever-forward over the past three years at least.

On the other hand, the Parisian has been guilty of at least four musical crimes – reviving the respective careers of Kelly Rowland, Flo Rida, Akon and the British Akon, Taio Cruz. Oh and remember ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by the Black Eyed Peas? His fault.

Collecting the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical Grammy for his One Love Club remix of Madonna’s Revolver, Guetta showed up at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night as a man who had it all – award recognition, fame on both coasts, a glamourous wife and of course, a long black leather waistcoat.

Yes, yes, you won - now go home and get changed

Hold on a second – a leather waistcoat, in 2011? Listen David, you may be able to sell over 15 million singles worldwide but if you think you can even convince 15 people a bizarre poncho/waistcoat combination you’ve got another thing coming.

If we can say one nice thing about Guetta’s award ensemble it is that at least it matched. Black, grey and white were the producer and DJ’s chosen colours of the night and he admirably co-ordinated each colour to a basic degree. However, that’s not to say a black leather waistcoat should ever be combined with grey acid wash jeans ever again – absolutely not. Each should be burnt and/or urinated upon.

Guetta’s outfit also included what appears to be a sleeveless hoodie blazer, black t-shirt, black belt, black belt and white long-sleeved tee underneath. Perhaps the producer took a glance in a full-length mirror and thought he looked fantastic, when in reality he showed up at the music industry’s most prestigious event dressed as a futuristic binman.

If there’s any solace to be found in Guetta’s appalling outfit, it’s that thankfully for the Frenchman, a fellow artist was able to take the spotlight from him. After all, when Lady Gaga showed up in a giant egg that she has spent the last 72 hours in, a leather waistcoat is the least of anybody’s worries.
