The Irish communications watchdog ComReg is working hard to get to the bottom of a Slovenian mobile phone scam that cost some Irish punters a pretty penny over the weekend.
Tens of thousands of Irish mobile phone users were targeted in a mobile phone scam that saw people being called by a +386 mobile number over the weekend.
Now, to the unsuspecting mobile phone user the +386 prefix could look like an Irish 086 number, but it was actually an automated scam that called people for a brief moment so that they didn’t have time to pick up.
When people called back to see who was ringing them in the middle of the night, the number sent them off to a premium rate service, or a telephone sex line, in some cases.
However, it looks like ComReg is working hard to make sure that anyone who was affected is reimbursed by their network provider and they’re also working to make sure the network providers don’t pay the scammers in question.
If you did happen to call back (don’t worry, you’re not alone), your best bet now is to get in touch with your network provider to see what, if any, charges were incurred.
