After years of waiting for Croke Park to change the Championship structure, the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have decided to choose their own system.
Discussing different Championship structures is as much a part of a GAA summer as CCCC meetings and Sunday evening managerial resignations. But the problem is it never goes past discussion stage, and the provincial structure remains.
Now the players representative body, the GPA, have decided that enough is enough and they are going to come up with a plan to change how the Championship is structured.
According to a report in today’s Irish Sun, the GPA are going to assemble a panel of recently retired and current GAA players and ask them to come up with three different Championship structures. These three plans will then be sent out to the 1,900 GPA members to vote on. The winning plan will then be unveiled before it is presented to Croke Park.
The plan is to have this completed by the end of August, with the football Championship only included at this stage, though the GPA also plan to perform a similar process for the hurling Championship at a later date.
While this is all very noble, and we are sure that the winning idea will have more than a lot of merit, the question is what will happen to this proposal when it lands on Liam O’Neill’s desk?
We wait to hear the GPA plan with interest. Let’s hope that the lads in HQ are equally eager.
