Would you like to live in a mansion that was once home to one of Ireland’s most notorious leaders? Well if you happen to have €7.5million just lying around the place, the palatial building could be yours…
Yes Abbeville, the home of former Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey has been put on the market with a guide price of a very cool €7.5million.
RTE reports that the mansion itself dates from 1770 and was designed by James Gandon, the man who brought us buildings such as the Custom House and the Four Courts. Swish, right?
Anyway, the property, which is being put up for sale by Savills is listed as a 14 bedroomed country house and it is described as a “magnificent Gandon mansion in a parkland setting just 10km from Dublin city centre.”
Believe it or not, the guide price for the property is actually a fifth of what Manor Park Homes paid for the estate in 2003, in order to allow Charlie and his wife Maureen, to continue living in the house.
So aside from a massive mansion what else would you receive in the sale?
Well a whole lot of land – 23 stables, yards and a tack room. Paddocks, an indoor equestrian arena, a gate lodge, a gardener’s cottage, an outdoor swimming pool, some formal gardens, private shooting and fishing, a lake and a fair few acres of land that can be used to grow crops on.
Did we mention that your own private ballroom is also included? Just think of the sessions you could have in that place. Oh, you also get your own private bar too which would be perfect for some impromptu house parties.
Bear in mind that you’d have to do a fair bit of decorating to get rid of Haughey’s style, but hey, if you can afford the €7.5million asking price, surely you’d have a few million elsewhere that could be spent on remodelling the place.
