Here’s a novel way to promote safe sex – simply grab a special condom that allows you to ‘check in’ from your smartphone and tell the world where you’re having sex, who you’re doing it with and how good it is.

ABC News reports that to celebrate National Condom Week in America, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest gave out 55,000 condoms to students in Washington. But these weren’t just ordinary condoms. Hell no. They were special hi-tech condoms that were marked with a barcode.

Why the barcode you ask? The barcode allowed students with a smartphone to check-in to www.wheredidyouwearit.com and put their tryst on the map. The point? To show people that they were being responsible and having safe sex. Perfect if you like telling the world about your sexual prowess. Also perfect if you’re so grateful that someone actually wants to sleep with you that you have to TELL THE WORLD!

“Wheredidyouwearit.com is like Foursquare for people who don’t want a sexually transmitted infection,” writes Planned Parenthood on their website.

It’s also like the check-in function on Facebook, only we doubt you’d be tagging all your friends in this status update…

Basically once you decide to get down and dirty, you use your smartphone to scan the barcode on the condom. Then you enter details about yourself, your partner and your relationship. Then you give your location. Visitors to the website can choose from a range of locations such as “kitchen” and “the great outdoors” or even “in a hot tub.” You can also rate how you found the entire experience, and no, before you ask, there isn’t an option that simply says “Giggidy!”

Once you’re checked-in, your tryst will appear as a little blue dot on a map of America, showing the world that yes, you have had sex. And it was safe. You can then bask in the fact that you are a stud, and you’ve got a blue dot to prove it. Oh yeah.

While the project may seem like a bad dose of too much information, Nathan Engebretson, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood said that the main point was to get people talking about safe sex and to use condoms.

“This isn’t about bragging. It’s not about digital notches in your bedpost. Even if people have no desire to check in, they’re still getting the sense of how many people like them use condoms,” he said.

It’s probably just a matter of time before Facebook announces a similar project…
