Iniesta taken aback over his Parkhead reception

One of the Barcelona’s greatest ever players says he was humbled by the reception he received from Celtic fans midweek.

Andres Iniesta had a quiet game by his lofty standards as the Spanish side gained a 1-0 victory at Parkhead to condemn the Bhoys to a second straight defeat in the Champions League but the home crowd was quick to pay tribute to the midfield maestro.

Iniesta was substituted with two minutes left at the game and the stadium broke into a round of applause for the gifted playmaker, something which hasn’t gone unnoticed by the player himself.

“It was a surprise, it was very special to feel the applause,” he later told the press.

“I’m very grateful to the people who do that kind of gesture because it comes from the inside, and when it comes from the inside that’s when it’s real,” he added.

“People don’t have the obligation to applaud. To be away from home and to be down a goal and for the people do that… it was emotional for me.”

It isn’t the first time he has praised the green and white supporters in Glasgow as he also paid tribute to the Bhoys last year when the two sides also met in the group stages.

“The Celtic fans are very special and the club and players can be very proud of them. They are the best I have ever heard and I am sure playing in front of a crowd like that can make a big difference for the players,” he said at the time.

We doubt any Celtic fans would mind if he decided to finish his career at Parkhead to experience even more support from the stands.
