The man who put the ball in the English net in 1990, Kevin Sheedy, is to undergo surgery after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

One of the heroes of our youth, Ireland and Everton star Kevin Sheedy, has gone public today with the news that he is suffering from bowel cancer.

The 52-year-old, who is now an academy coach at Everton, will undergo surgery this week.

“It's not ideal but I have to remain positive," said Sheedy on Everton’s website. "After a period of rehabilitation I will return to my coaching role at Everton."

And the man who scored the goal against England at Italia 90 had a word of warning for all of us to be more health aware.

"There is a history in the family," he told evertonfc.com. "It's so important that people don't ignore the early signs and symptoms and don't be afraid to consult a GP."

Sheedy played for Ireland 46 times, scoring nine goals, and he is a club legend at Everton, where he played for 10 years.
