A home is robbed somewhere in Ireland every 14 minutes, a new study has found.
Official figures indicate that there were 25,340 reported home robberies during 2010.
However, the full figure is believed to be far higher – in the region of 30,000 – as on average only seven out of 10 burglaries are reported.
The Irish Sun has done the decent thing and chopped down the figures to give a more dramatic outlook, discovering too that this translates to around 100 break-ins each day.
It also emerged that the average haul is around £3,000 in cash and goods.
Gold jewellery has become a key target for thieves – while it was once difficult to sell on, the high market value of the metal has meant it can now be taken to scrap gold companies who are paying top dollar.
Alarmingly, some 85 per cent of robberies are carried out while at least one person is at home.
