Irish eyes were smiling – though probably a little tired – in the wee hours of this morning as WWE wrestler Sheamus won the 2012 Royal Rumble, setting up a potential WrestleMania 28 main event title shot.

The 6’4″, 267 lb ‘Celtic Warrior’ was victorious at last night’s WWE pay-per-view event and has now seemingly punched his ticket for a historic main event bout against either the WWE champion or World Heavyweight champion.

Sheamus was ultimately victorious in the 30-man match-up by tossing returning WWE star Chris Jericho over the top ropes for the victory. The 34-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Farrelly, has been a huge success since making his WWE debut in 2009 and is a former two-time World Champion and 2010 King of the Ring winner.

Aside from a few notable changes in the past, the winner of the Royal Rumble has typically gone on to receive a prestigious main event slot at WrestleMania, which is without doubt the biggest night in the wrestling industry’s calendar year.

As Sheamus fights for the SmackDown brand of WWE, it is likely that the Cabra native will face World Heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan, who he has feuded with in the past. However, he still has the option to face WWE Champion CM Punk of the rival Raw brand, who last night defended his title over Dolph Ziggler.

If you feel like staying up late again, Sheamus will be the star attraction for tonight’s broadcast of WWE Raw, which begins on Sky Sports 3 at 2am. Either way, expect plenty of twists and turns for the Irish wrestler ahead of WrestleMania XXVIII on April 1.
