Numerous arrests have been made after public order offences during Galway’s unofficial ‘college week’.
It has been reported that 37 people in the city have been arrested since the start of the week for anti-social behaviour.
Several arrests were made in the Dun na Coiribe estate after students fired projectiles including glass bottles.
The weapons were thrown at fire crews who had come to extinguish Bonfires near the Headford road on Monday.
A number of the residents of the area had complained that they couldn’t get out of their estates – that they were being blocked by hoards of drunken students.
President of NUIG Dr Jim Browne has called for an end to ‘college week’ after the events of this week.
The University had previously withdrawn its support for what was previously known as Rag Week in 2009 after a “series of unfortunate incidents”.
