It’s official, Irish women are smarter than men

Well, it’s been confirmed: women are smarter than men. Yes, something that the female of the species has known for years has finally been made official. Now you know why your other half always has that smug smile on her face when you do something particularly stupid.

The Irish Examiner reports today that in terms of education and brains, women are more qualified than men. According to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office the reason women are topping the polls stems from the fact that men are more likely to leave school early while women invest in their education.

More than half of Irish women aged between 25 and 35 are college-educated. Meanwhile less than 4 out of 10 men in that same age bracket hold any kind of third-level qualification. This information comes from the CSO’s Women and Men in Ireland 2011 report.

Other statistics from the report show that Irish women work fewer hours than their male counterparts, earn less and are under-represented in the Oireachtas and in local and regional authorities.

When it comes to politics, participants are predominately male. In 2011, only 15.1 per cent of TDs were women and the average female representation in national parliaments for EU countries was just a quarter.

Irish males have a higher rate of employment than females, but they also have a much higher rate of unemployment. The statistics show that this is because men are more likely to work in the labour force. The figures for people who choose to look after home and family rather than pursuing a career remain overwhelmingly female.

Women in Ireland also have a higher fertility rate than women from any other EU country.

Men may earn more and be better represented when it comes to politics, but honestly lads? We’re just biding our time…
