Faced with the prospect of being temporarily jobless during the NBA lockout, Miami Heat megastar Dwyane Wade has been offered a lifeline by a KFC restaurant where he used to work.
A dispute between the NBA Players’ Union and NBA owners came into effect at the beginning of this month and with no end to the impasse yet in sight, the prospect of there being no NBA next season remains on the cards.
As a result, hundreds of multi-millionaire basketball stars may be forced to look elsewhere for work in the coming months.
Miami Heat superstar Dwayne Wade needn’t worry too much, however, as he has already been approached by his former employers KFC, for whom he worked in the Chicago area when he was a teenager.
Once the lockout became official, Wade jokingly tweeted “Any1 hiring?” and KFC were quick to pick up on what could be some valuable publicity for the fried chicken chain and launched an attempt to persuade Wade to flee the Miami coop.
KFC general manager John Cywinski wrote a letter to Wade saying that he will make a $250,000 donation to the company’s Colonel Scholars program in Wade’s name if he agrees to work at a local KFC drive-thru window and insisted there was no fowl play involved.
Cywinski wrote: “We couldn’t help but notice your recent tweet about looking for a new line of work in light of the lockout.”
“We’re always looking for folks with precisely your qualifications — initiative, teamwork and the ability to make buckets in a hurry.”
Sure, the rest of the workers would be small fry compared to Wade, he’d need a thick skin to deal with star-struck customers, and may not be happy at the poultry wages on offer, but a temporary role at KFC would bring him buckets of finger lickin’ good publicity, unless he was to chicken out at the last minute of course.
