Three out of the six nominees come from the Premier League leaders, but one of them is the clear favourite to land the award.

That man, of course, is Luis Suarez, who is the nigh on unbackable favourite to win the award after a season in which he has scored 28 league goals and delivered a series of scintillating performances.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and the other half of the deadly SAS partnership, Daniel Sturridge, have also been nominated for the award, alongside Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana.

Hazard and Sturridge, meanwhile, are also up for the Young Player of the Year award where there are also nominations for Everton’s Ross Barkley, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, highly-sought after Southampton defender Luke Shaw and another Liverpool man, Raheem Sterling.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in London on Sunday week, when the Premier League Team of the Year will also be announced; fingers crossed they might find a place for Seamus Coleman at right-back.
