Looks like we are finally approaching the end of the Seanie Johnston saga

We’re not there yet but it looks like the Seanie Johnston saga will be resolved one way or the other in the coming days.

Championship 2012 has already started but the Seanie Johnston transfer saga still lumbers on. The Cavan man’s proposed switch to play for Kildare has been in the news now for at least six months but it seems we are finally going to have a resolution, one way or the other.

The big deadline looming for Johnston is May 19. On that date, his proposed new club, St Kevin’s, are scheduled to play St Mary’s Leixlip in the Kildare club championship. As we know, a player who switches must play in his new county’s club championship before he can line out for the inter-county side. If Johnston’s transfer is not approved by Saturday week, his hopes of appearing for the Lilywhites this summer are over.

And the Kildare County Board have already told the Irish Times that they will not be moving the game to accommodate Johnston. They quote Kildare secretary Kathleen O’Neill, who says: “I wouldn’t think there’ll be any moving the fixture. That weekend has been designated for clubs and no one’s looking for any changes.”

So, what are the chances of Johnston’s move being approved by then? It is still hard to judge. The CCCC met on Tuesday night to go over the matter again and Johnston submitted new documents regarding his life in Kildare, where he works as a teacher in Straffan.

Tonight, they all meet again where Cavan Gaels and the Cavan County Board will give their view on the matter, and is understood both are still against the move.

The CCCC may now have enough proof that Johnston is based in Kildare but the ethics of the move, and the potential for others to follow suit, may be the rock this case finally flounders on.
