Snooker’s world final was overshadowed by the John Higgins investigation, there was controversy in the 1000 Guineas and Rory McIlroy dazzled in North Carolina.

Australian Neil Robertson came from behind to take an overnight lead over Graeme Dott in the final of the World Snooker Championship.

However, snooker’s attention was diverted away from its showpiece match by the News of the World allegations that three-time world champion John Higgins had accepted €300,000 to fix certain frames in matches later this year.

Elsewhere, there was more controversy at Newmarket as Henry Cecil’s outsider of the field, Jacqueline Quest, was stripped of the 1000 Guineas in the stewards’ room after coming first past the post in the second Flat Classic of the season.

Jacqueline Quest had pipped favourite Special Duty by a nose but the placings were reversed following a stewards’ enquiry.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy became the first winner of a PGA Tour event since Tiger Woods’s debut victory 14 years ago. The Northern Irishman produced a scintillating ten-under-par final round of 62 to run out a four-stroke winner over Masters champion Phil Mickelson.

Woods, playing his second tournament since returning to action following the revelations about his personal shenanigans, had missed the cut following a disastrous 79 on Friday.

In boxing, Floyd Mayweather edged ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley on points at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
