Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins has refuted media scrutiny over value for money of a three-day ‘study break’ taken by 250 MEPs in a five-star Portuguese hotel as “all shite”.

The €400,000 think-in is taking place on the island of Madeira at a luxurious five-star hotel, however, Higgins has ridiculed the expense of the event.

“I haven’t a clue what star [hotel] it is,” Higgins told the Irish Independent.

“All I know is that it’s a very good hotel, the accommodation is wonderful, the food is lovely. For people who work so hard, we’re entitled to that. You don’t expect us to stay in B&Bs, do you?”

When questioned on the cost of the event – which is being paid for by the European taxpayer – the Connacht-Ulster MEP said it’s “all sh*te if you don’t mind me saying so. That’s typical media bluster, you know. I don’t share that [belief] at all.”
