Up to 30 Manchester United fans staged a protest outside the home of Wayne Rooney on Thursday night, according to reports.
The police were called to Rooney’s mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire at 8.30pm to disperse the mob, who had gathered to display their anger at Rooney’s public desire to leave Manchester United, while rumours that he is preparing to join United’s arch rivals Manchester City only served to fuel the anger of the Red Devils’ supporters.
Rooney’s home, Candysfield, is surrounded by a wall and gates for added security and is located along a ‘millionaires' row’ alongside houses owned by Rooney’s United team-mates Wes Brown and Michael Carrick.
Cheshire Police confirmed that an incident had indeed occurred on Thursday night, but refused to give further details.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "Cheshire Police can confirm that at 8.30pm, a call was received from a resident in Prestbury regarding 20 to 30 people assembling outside their address.
"Police attended the scene and the group dispersed peacefully. No offences were disclosed."
