Former Waterford star John Mullane has denied any involvement in the departure of Michael Ryan as Waterford hurling manager and also ruled out the possibility of a return to action.

Speaking in the Indo today, the De La Salle man said he had nothing to do with the player’s meeting that decided they no longer wanted Ryan at the helm after two years in charge of the Deise.

Ryan’s rejection by the players for a further term has led to suggestions by some in the county that elements of the 2012 squad were behind the move, something Mullane has vehemently denied.

“I felt that it was the best thing to do (Ryan’s departure), the honourable thing, and I certainly wasn’t having my name attached to any heave,” he said.

As well as distancing himself from any involvement, the former All-Star also ruled out the possibility of donning the white jersey next year.

Mullane also conceded that his proposal earlier this year for former Cork goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack for the role at some stage in the future “didn’t help”, a proposal he reiterated again in his column today.

Mullane’s brother-in-law Derek McGrath, current coach of De La Salle and Ken McGrath have been mentioned as possible candidates and it looks increasingly likely that the County Board will appoint within the county due to their current financial difficulties.
