Dan Smyth, we salute you…

Whenever JOE played football on a Saturday we were always a solid rather than a spectacular type of player.

Our manager could always rely on us to help rally the team when we found ourselves 1-0 down away from home and playing against the driving rain.

We had guts, spirit and a bit of skill when required so that’s why we sympathised with Dan Smyth, the striker of Dublin amateur side FC Santos, after he picked up a nasty injury last Saturday.

Smyth found himself through on goal with only the keeper to beat which he did so with aplomb.

The striker met the ball first and put in the back of the net, but the momentum of the ‘keeper meant he accidentally followed through and broke Dan’s leg.

Dan’s teammate and JOE reader Lee Bird said “Everyone was delighted with the goal and we rushed to celebrate with him but all Dan could say was: “Thanks lads but please call an ambulance”.

When the emergency services arrived the players and the referee couldn’t resist making the most of a bad situation by smiling for a picture while Dan was lying down receiving oxygen. We think Dan is giving a little thumbs up here too…

Dan went off in an ambulance to a round of applause from both sets of teams and the striker had his operation on Monday and it seems like he is in good spirits.

Everyone here wishes Dan all the best in his recovery and remember lads that if you have any stories like this then feel free to get in touch with JOE on twitter or via [email protected]
