We’re just surprised it took so long for the Angela Merkel flag idea to take off in the GAA world…

It was the flag of the summer. The tricolour adorned with the phrase ‘Merkel thinks we’re at work’ earned instant fame for the recently christened ‘Merkel crew’, exposure in worldwide media and, we can only assume, plenty of very welcome female attention throughout the summer months.

It was only a matter of time before the idea caught on in the GAA world; we’re just surprised it took until the day of the All-Ireland Hurling Final for it to make a public appearance.

It wouldn’t have worked if the supporters in the picture above had simply borrowed the same phrase and stuck it on a Galway flag, the savin’ turf slogan is quintessentially Irish, quintessentially GAA and the German chancellor herself would probably have no idea what it meant if she came across it.

Keep your eyes peeled for it in Croker this afternoon, it deserves all the exposure it’s surely going to get.

Hat-tip to TG4 and RTE presenter, Maire Treasa ni Cheallaigh for putting this beauty up on Twitter.
