That’s Gas – Pic: Waterford soccer club surely the first in the country to have a referee use vanishing spray in a match

The 2014 Tom Flynn Cup may go down in Irish football history. Sort of.

It seems the innovative use of vanishing spray by referees at the World Cup has filtered down to the amateur game in Ireland already.

Posted on Ferrybank AFC’s Facebook page yesterday, this picture from the Tom Flynn Cup for U12 girls shows that the magic spray is in use in Waterford.

Ferrybank, where Irish international John O’Shea started his career, must be the first team in Ireland to use the ‘technology’ even if we have a suspicion the referee here, Bryan O’Kane, might be just using his own can of shaving foam.

We spoke to the man who took the photos, club member Luke Myers, and he said that Bryan had tipped him off about the can so that eh could be ready for the shot. He also told us that the reaction of the crowd to the bit of showmanship was fantastic.

Thanks to David Walsh for the heads up and credit to Luke Myers for taking the snaps.
